the series interprets the miniatures from “the itinerary and the description of the stages of sultan süleyman han’s campaign in iraq” of nasuhü’s silâhi, who was a renowned mathematician, historian, calligrapher, painter and knight during the reign of süleyman the magnificent. in this exceptional work which was created during kanuni’s first iraq campaign between 1533-36, and which is considered as a 16th century land atlas of anatolia, west iran and iraq; nasuhü’s silâhi illustrates the nature and the settlements along the itinerary of the army, totally based on his own observations, yet all with respect to their relative locations, with a truly naive sweetness; in a lively, credible and indeed a beautiful way. in these guilded and colorful miniatures, the towns, fortresses, houses with their invitingly open doors, market places, lodges, baths; as well as mountains, plains, trees and waters; even birds or rabbits, reflect the warmth of the hot near eastern sun
