yellow tiles of the seljuks

the series interprets the magnificient ceramic wall tiles found at  the  great  and  small  palaces  in   kubad abad,  by the lake of beyşehir, which the anatolian seljuks had built in the first half of the 13th century.  the seljuks created their own unique style of art by incorporating their central asian shamanistic heritage with the nearby byzantian art and harmoniously blending it within their islamic culture in an outstandingly mature open-heartedness.   instead of the large mosaic wall panels of the seljuks, made up of individually patterned small tiles; the multi-pieced canvases of this series are designated as forming a large scale single pattern made up of several small canvases.  angular shaped sides of these canvases are meant to make reference to the eight pointed star and cruciform tiles or to the mausoleum architecture of the period, the kumbets.  although, most of the originals of these under-glaze painted tiles were in turquoise and dark cobalt blue; these paintings are all interpreted in the yellowish green or brown tones of the colors of “lustre tiles”  of the seljuks, which were painted on glaze by the special technique using gold, silver or similar valuable metal powders.  these “yellow tiles”  are depicting the joyful and lively, round faced, almond eyed noblemen and women of the court, with diamond adorned hair clipses and “tiraz”s on the sleeves of their kaftans as the sign of their nobility.  the series also includes the mythical beasts of which the seljuks believed as having magical protecting powers, like the man-headed, lion or bird-bodied sphinxes or harpies and the examples of the stylish floral motifs and geometric patterns, which the seljuks used largely on their ceramic tiles and other elements of architectural decoration, such as stone and wood carvings.
